The Big Tech Exodus – When You Can Work from Anywhere… Why Not?

At the beginning of the pandemic, the tech workforce – and a significant percentage of the world’s population – were asked to work from home. Nabis, a leading cannabis distribution platform in California, realizes that these employees are now both comfortable and productive while working remotely. Vince Ning, CEO of Nabis, left his position as a software engineer with Microsoft to start his own business, an app development platform that he eventually sold and is now Amazon’s AppSync. Following this Ning, and co-founder Jun S. Lee started Nabis in 2017 with the vision “To empower the world to discover cannabis by providing choice, access, and innovation.” Following this vision, they have grown from a simple delivery truck to a diverse company that offers their clients scalable, innovative services and access to what is currently the largest cannabis market in the world. And they’re hiring.

Is the tech grass really greener on the cannabis side of the fence?

According to Ning, yes, it’s very green. Once he set forth to learn about the industry and with a new business, he was able to quickly and clearly see the need within cannabis for “advancement from a tech sophistication standpoint.” That was the appeal – the “once in a lifetime” opportunity to build technology that manipulates something in the real world, on the ground level.

Seeking those who make an impact

The cannabis industry, Ning says, offers a fun and exciting opportunity to “work together to build something, rather than disrupt something.” That includes a new hybrid approach when it comes to “going to work.” Talent that has a great impact on projects and can still work collaboratively while working from home is incredibly sought after right now. Offering that flexibility is undoubtedly part of cannabis’s allure.

Real-world problems equal growing pains and opportunity

Demand for cannabis is not diminishing. In many cases, it’s rapidly growing. Logistically this creates positions and openings all across the sector as scalability issues prevail. In distribution, compliance, SAS, automation, and many other areas, the demand for hungry and qualified tech personnel is also expanding. It is such a young industry that the cannabis infrastructure is still being built. For those who have the desire to lay foundations and be a part of industry firsts, cannabis technology dangles one heck of a carrot.
