GoFire’s mission is to bring clarity and choice to medicine by empowering patients through innovative technology. The discussion touches on the legitimacy of plant-based medicine, the technology and how the GoFire device and app can be used in the medical field in the very near future. Calfee and his team in Denver developed the new state of the art vaporizer that addresses the need for consistency and control. Development started with a radical idea to improve on the already saturated market of cannabis vaporizers. It expanded from there with intense brainstorming sessions as well as medical input. Another major motivator came when Calfee's back was severely injured in a car accident just after founding the company in 2014. In constant pain, Calfee's drive to succeed pushed him to develop the “best vaporizer out there” to satisfy his own needs for controlled relief.

The Device

Made of medical grade indestructible material, GoFire resembles an iPhone in size and feel. The device’s smart meter dosing vaporizer turns the cannabis oil into a highly technical device that puts the focus on cannabis-based medicine and its possibilities for pain relief. The device manages this by measuring out exact dosages of 2.5-milligram increments with just one click of its dosing wheel. Cartridges are ordered separately.  GoFire’s CTO, Joe Keenan, is an individual with pulmonary medicine specialization who already has developed more than 30 FDA-approved devices for drug delivery.

“We are following those same protocols with the development of this product,” Calfee said. “We wanted to bring someone in who knew what they were doing, and take the right steps so this is set up to deliver true medicine.”

Calfee added that GoFire’s medical board reported that physicians were looking for a tool to allow them to track use and effect in their patients. It will give “control back to physicians so they can ultimately prescribe this as medicine,” Calfee says. “We are taking the steps to make sure we are set up for FDA approval.”

The App

While the device can work as a stand-alone, the app allows patients to monitor exactly how much cannabis they're vaping, adjust temperature settings, and record their reactions to what they've just ingested. By journaling experiences through the app, the user can document what specific dosage or cannabis oil was helpful for their specific insomnia, anxiety, or pain. And through its community connections, users can anonymously discover what’s working for others in search of a similar type of relief. He says consumers can think of GoFire as a “Yelp meets Fitbit for the alternative health space.” Think of it as crowd sourcing-like into a consumer fed backend.

“What works for your neighbor might just work well for you,” Calfee says. “There are some extensive algorithms that do run that analysis and are able to then present to the consumer the products we hope they’re looking for. We’re trying to be a night light in a dark room.”

Consumers should be able to open up the app and search for something like insomnia and, based on anonymous HIPPA compliant information gathered from the community, be driven to the product that will give them the desired effect. Calfee says that GoFire is attempting to bring “clarity and choice to alternative medicine through technology. It is purely a backend; GoFire doesn’t collect any personal health identifying information. “It’s not about the individual, it’s the community and about the trends that are moving through the community,” Calfee says. “That’s something we stand by.”

Calfee says that it’s important for the user to journal and report back to the community in order to keep the flow of information accurate and revealing. In order to find what works best the community works together to continue the learning curve. In this way it will continue to improve the experience, making it easier for any individual using the platform. GoFire can even give the consumer the location of stores that sell exactly the product that they’re looking for.

The Vape

During the interview Calfee discusses the device’s unique features including the dosing chamber that delivers the highest quality vapor through superheating air, free of metallic particulates, thus mitigating carcinogens. This ultimately makes it the safest vaporizer on the market. As well Calfee says that the cartridge will continue to give the user a consistent taste and flavor with no degradation through repeated use, allowing for a more enjoyable experience.

“It’s heat, not burn technology,” Calfee says. “It doesn’t taste burnt; it’s almost a cool vapor feeling. There’s no cough. It’s a fresh dose every time.”

When a consumer loads the cannabis-oil filled cartridge into the GoFire vaporizer, the app will read the cartridge and let consumers know the exact content of cannabinoids like THC, THCA, and CBD contained within, as well as the volatile unsaturated hydrocarbons found in the plant’s essential oils, all based upon the third party lab analysis of the oil. Calfee says that what GoFire is bringing to the public is “what has been needed for a long time. At the end of the day the device speaks for itself,” Calfee says. “Once you’ve tried it it’s hard to go back to anything else because it tastes how the plant was intended to taste and that’s exciting.”
