The Retrograde Combine Classic Rock Sounds with Modern Licks and Skillful Musicianship

March 27, 2024- Tallahassee Fl- The rock n roll nod goes to newcomers The Retrograde who combine the classic rock sound with modern licks and skillful musicianship. Their premiere single, “I Need A Little” will be released on Cannabis Records on March 29, 2024; the full album will follow in the summer.

The Retrograde’s Musical Journey

The trio began working hard, keeping their chops up, practicing and writing original songs in 2020 during the pandemic. As the band evolved their sound went from a heavy Led Zeppelin tone to a more bluesy groove filled rock sound. When they had enough songs, the 3 friends, Joe Fox, lead vocals; Carson Degner on drums and Josiah Pye on bass; were ready to record their debut album. They settled in to record at the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama (Gregg Allman, Alicia Keys).

By the end of 2023, The Retrograde were in the studio recording when they posted a short clip of their producer listening to one of the songs they had just laid down. His raw reaction was captured and exuded real accomplishment and excitement. By the next morning, the video hit 3 million views and had thousands of likes on Instagram. In an instant, The Retrograde had been catapulted from a regional rock band based in Tallahassee, Florida to a band with engaged followers worldwide. 

Social Media Breakthrough

The viral clip is currently at 18 million views on Instagram and growing. “After that I started studying what made that video so popular. People like genuine reactions, and they appreciate the music. If people watch 80% of the video, the algorithm will show more people. Most artists would rather be on stage playing, but just like taxes and late fees, you have to pay your dues and put in the work,” says lead singer/songwriter, Joe Fox.

It’s not about the music anymore, it’s about your social media and how many fans are engaged. It is about building a loyal following on social media and having great music to back it up. “We were fortunate at the beginning of our career to gain a great following on Instagram that opened doors for us,” says Joe.

“I Need A Little” is a song with substance but when you hear the second part of the chorus, it’s evident that it’s also about relationships. “Being able to ride the line of depth and relationships also leaves room for interpretation,” adds Joe.

The Retrograde is a new rock act that pays homage to the classics while pursuing their own unique style and sound. Their newfound understanding of social media and how to market their band in a crowded, oversaturated social media addicted world has enlightened them and made them very aware of the business and how quickly things can change.
