In the rapidly evolving landscape of the cannabis industry, one aspect remains constant: the critical importance of preserving the freshness, potency, and quality of cannabis products from cultivation to consumption.

Recognizing this necessity, Grove Bags has emerged as a pioneer in cannabis packaging with its innovative technologies, TerpLoc™ and SafeVac, setting new standards for preservation and protection.

Cannabis Tech spoke with Jack Grover, the company’s founder, to discuss how their passive modified atmospheric film curates the perfect environment to extend cannabis shelf-life.

What is Passive Modified Atmospheric Film?

To illustrate the concept of passive modified atmospheric film in an easily understandable way, let’s consider salad packaging. Have you ever noticed that pre-packaged, bagged salads often come in unique bags with tiny pinholes? These bags are designed to control the exchange of gases, just like Grove Bags’ TerpLoc™ technology does for cannabis.

Imagine your favorite salad mix inside one of these bags. As the salad sits in the bag, it releases gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) and moisture. Without a way for these gases to escape, the salad would become soggy and spoil quickly. However, the remarkable film used in these bags allows just enough CO2 to escape while also preventing too much oxygen from entering. This controlled gas exchange creates an environment that slows down the decay process, keeping your salad fresh for longer.

Now, let’s apply this concept to cannabis preservation. Like salads, cannabis also releases gases and moisture after it’s harvested. Without proper packaging, these gases can build up and cause the cannabis to degrade, losing its potency and aroma.

Grove Bags’ TerpLoc™ technology works similarly to these bags for salads, allowing for a controlled exchange of gases. This means that excess moisture and gases can escape while the right amount of oxygen is maintained to slow down the degradation process.

As a result, cannabis stored in TerpLoc™ powered solutions stays fresher and more potent for longer, preserving its valuable compounds for a premium experience.

TerpLoc™: A Breakthrough for Cannabis Shelf-Life

At the heart of Grove Bags’ revolutionary packaging solutions lies TerpLoc™ technology. Unlike traditional storage methods that often fall short in maintaining optimal conditions for cannabis, TerpLoc™ is engineered specifically for the unique physiology of the plant.

Through rigorous testing and collaboration with reputable laboratories, Grove Bags has demonstrated the effectiveness of TerpLoc™ in preserving the full spectrum of volatile compounds found in cannabis. Studies have consistently shown that cannabis flower stored in TerpLoc™ powered storage solutions retains higher levels of cannabinoids and terpenes compared to traditional glass jars and other storage containers.

Grover added, “This allows us to maintain much more potent cannabis – rather than burping, we’re doing an atmospheric exchange to achieve consistency and ensure product integrity all the way down the supply chain to the consumer.”

The key to TerpLoc™’s success lies in its ability to create and maintain an ideal microclimate within the packaging. By regulating oxygen levels and allowing for proper moisture distribution, TerpLoc™ ensures that cannabis remains in peak condition, free from mold growth and degradation. This extends the cannabis shelf-life as well as enhances its aroma, flavor, and overall potency.

So, What is the Shelf-Life of Cannabis Flower?

The answer to that question is dependent on how the flower is packaged and stored. Grove Bags conducted a study to assess the effectiveness of their TerpLoc™ technology in preserving the freshness and potency of cannabis flower over time.

To understand the unique properties of cannabis and its reaction to different storage environments, Grove Bags collaborated with Excelsior Analytical Labs in Union City, CA, for testing. The study involved 11 different storage conditions, including various sizes of Grove Bags pouches and other conventional containers used for cannabis storage.

The cannabis samples were stored for 6 weeks at room temperature with mild agitation, and then tested for potency and terpenoid levels using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography with flame ionized detection (FID), respectively.

As anticipated, Grove Bags’ 1 oz pouch exhibited the highest retention of terpenes and cannabinoids compared to other storage conditions. Specifically, the levels of terpenes were up to 36.72% higher, and Max THC (THCa x 0.877 + THC) was up to 7.25% higher in cannabis stored in the Grove Bags 1 oz pouch.

Ironically, the vessel with the lowest rate of terpene retention was the plastic child-proof dram – one of the most common packaging containers in the cannabis space.

SafeVac: Elevating Cannabis Preservation to New Heights

Building upon the success of TerpLoc™, Grove Bags has introduced SafeVac, the ultimate solution for maximizing cannabis potency and quality. SafeVac harnesses the power of vacuum-sealed technology, combined with TerpLoc™, to create an unparalleled preservation environment for cannabis.

Grover explained that traditional vacuum seal bags are typically made of non-UV-protected, porous, and highly statically charged nylon. He added, “These are super environmentally unfriendly materials that are abrasive and result in tremendous terp loss.”

He continued, “Besides light degradation, the nylon can actually leach trichomes and hold them in the film, and since terpenes are in the trichomes, it results in substantial quality loss.”

Unlike traditional vacuum-sealed films designed for food, SafeVac is engineered explicitly for cannabis, offering cultivators a convenient and effective way to protect their crops during storage and transit. By eliminating the need for manual burping and ensuring proper moisture distribution, SafeVac streamlines operations for cultivators, allowing them to focus on what they do best: cultivating premium-quality cannabis.

The Game-Changing Impact on Cultivators and Consumers

For cannabis cultivators, Grove Bags’ TerpLoc™ and SafeVac represent a paradigm shift in preservation technology. By providing a reliable and efficient means of preserving the freshness and potency of their products, Grove Bags empowers cultivators to deliver consistently high-quality cannabis to consumers, enhancing their reputation and competitiveness in the market.

For cannabis consumers, the benefits of Grove Bags’ technology are equally profound. With TerpLoc™ and SafeVac, consumers can trust that their products retain the full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes, ensuring a premium experience with every use. Whether it’s the aroma, flavor, or psychoactive effects, Grove Bags’ packaging solutions preserve the essence of cannabis, allowing consumers to enjoy the plant as nature intended.

Grove Bags’ TerpLoc™ and SafeVac technologies represent a game-changing innovation in cannabis packaging and extending cannabis shelf-life. By prioritizing the preservation and protection of trichomes and terpenes, Grove Bags is not only shaping the future of the cannabis industry but also enhancing the overall experience for cultivators and consumers alike. As the industry continues to evolve, Grove Bags remains committed to delivering cutting-edge solutions that elevate cannabis preservation to new heights.
