While it might seem like you can just buy a good cannabis seed, plant it, water it, and wait for it to grow, the process is actually much more complex. Several key factors influence the development of a healthy cannabis plant, and ignoring even one of them can lead to poor growth.

It’s also worth noting that the amount of light can vary depending on the type of cannabis seed you’re growing (photoperiod or autoflower).

  • Photoperiod Seeds

Photoperiod cannabis seeds need 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness during the seedling and vegetative stages. To start flowering, switch to a 12-hour light and 12-hour dark cycle.

  • Autoflower Seeds

Autoflower cannabis seeds don’t rely on light cycles to flower. They typically thrive with 18-20 hours of light from seedling to harvest, though some growers use 24 hours of light.

But it does not mean you can use regular light. For indoor growers, using full-spectrum grow lights mimics the sun and provides a balance of blue and red wavelengths. Blue light encourages vegetative growth, while red light supports flowering. 

On the other hand, outdoor growers must ensure their plants receive at least 12 hours of sunlight during the growing season. Too little light can stunt growth, while too much light can stress the plant. The trick is to find the right balance to encourage strong, healthy plants from the start.
